A publication and a shortlisting

My final publication of 2019 was in the fabulously titled With One Eye on the Cows, the latest anthology from the Bath Flash Fiction Awards. It contains my story A Body Remembers which was shortlisted for the award in the first quarter of 2019. You can buy the anthology direct from Ad Hoc Publishing here. If you’ve made it your New Year’s Resolution to support independent publishers, here’s your chance!

The beginning of 2020 brought more good news: my story Snakes and Snails has been shortlisted for the Scottish Arts Trust Flash Fiction Award. You can read my story and the other shortlisted stories here. The winners will be announced on 22nd February in great style at the Scottish Arts Trust Flash Bash.

Scottish Arts Trust anthology published

My short story Game On, shortlisted for the Scottish Arts Trust (SAT) Short Story Award 2018, has been published in their anthology. Called The Desperation Game, it includes short listed and winning stories from their competitions from 2014 to 2018.  The book features striking original art work by SAT member Gordon Mitchell. You can buy a copy here.

I was delighted to be longlisted again this year, for the Scottish Arts Trust Short Story Award 2019 and wish those who progressed to the shortlist all the best of luck. They are guaranteed a wonderful evening at the gala awards dinner.

Historic flash fiction with a true life twist published by FlashBack Fiction

FlashBack Fiction are uniquely dedicated to publishing historic flash fiction. I was delighted when they chose to publish my story Nonna No Name. This story is closely based on a true story and FlashBack showed the greatest care in preparing the story for publication. I also recorded the story, something I’ve not done before but which was very appropriate for this story, being based on a story that has been passed down orally through successive generations. You can read the story and listen to the recording here.

Shortlisted for the Bath Flash Fiction Award

After many attempts and two longlistings, I finally made it to the Bath Flash Fiction Award shortlist. The competition attracted over 980 entries, so I am more than pleased to have reached the last 20. Vanessa Gebbies’ judging report is a fascinating insight into the selection process. You can read it here. My story A Body Remembers will be published in the BFFA 2019 anthology in December.

New anthologies from Ad Hoc Fiction

One of my proudest achievements in 2018 was being shortlisted for the Bath Short Story Award and I’m delighted that my story The River is Always Right has been included in their annual anthology. You can buy it directly from Ad Hoc Fiction here.

And I finally made it on to the Bath Flash Fiction Award long list after many attempts! My flash fiction story Shenanigans is included in their anthology Things Left and Found by the Side of the Road : Bath Flash Volume 3. You can buy it here .

Writers Celebrated at the Scottish Arts Club Awards Dinner

I had the most wonderful evening as a finalist at the Scottish Arts Club Short Story Awards dinner. Six of the seven shortlisted authors were able to attend the event at the Club’s headquarters in Edinburgh, along with two of the three Flash Fiction finalists. Each story was championed by one of the competition’s readers, drawn from the club’s members. Afterwards, we were treated to an excellent dinner in the club’s private dining room, where the wine and conversation flowed. It was an evening of validation and celebration for all the finalists, and one I won’t forget.   Congratulations to the overall winner Mara Buck. Her story Trophy was a more-than-worthy winner. You can read all the shortlisted stories here.

A great essay on unusual structures in flash stories

Delighted to see my reverse-order story Overspill get a mention in this essay from TSS Publishing on unusual structures in flash fiction. There are lots of links to some amazingly creative work in the essay too, to whet your appetite. The author, Sophie van Llewyn,  is a wonderful short fiction writer herself and I thoroughly recommend checking out her work.

You can read Overspill in Two from Ellipsis Zine. Buy it direct from the publisher here.
